Disconnectors lifecycle management

Pondicherry-based S&S Power Switchgear Equipment Ltd has formed a separate division to provide retrofit, refurbishment and lifecycle support services for disconnectors
Disconnectors are remarkable pieces of equipment. They can stay in the same position for years before they have to switch. But then, at the crucial moment, they have to work perfectly, no matter what the conditions are – whether they are in the freezing cold or in the extreme heat.
Disconnectors have evolved over a period of time. The changes in design, material technology and manufacturing processes have led to new disconnectors with increased reliability, improved performance, extended lifecycle, and additional features.
Further, the need for improved quality of power evacuation, continuous availability without interruption, effective control and maintenance pose a high demand on the functioning of the existing disconnectors. The existing disconnectors in service may not be in a position to meet such demands always.
The needs of various utility and industrial customers for replacement of components, modifications to suit changes with respect to the latest demands and requirements as well as life extension of disconnectors in service has to be carefully assessed and appropriate solution needs to be arrived at.
Depending on the needs and demands of customers, retrofit, refurbishment, rejuvenation, over-hauling, and replacement of existing disconnectors and complete life cycle management solutions have to be offered. Critical expertise in the design, manufacture, supply and service of disconnectors are required in providing suitable life extension options for disconnectors.
Retrofit is more of a process than a product. It requires engineering expertise and system and equipment knowledge. Retrofit projects are customised to meet customers’ particular requirements. Retrofit involves assessing the condition of existing equipment and deciding components that need to be replaced, components that need to be modified and components that can be reused, all based on the customers’ future requirements. The know-how and flexibility to tailor a retrofit solution to the specific needs of the customer irrespective of the make and model of the disconnectors is the key.
The major advantages of retrofit and refurbishment over new installations are: Minimum shut down time of the substation bays Extended life time of the disconnector with a minimum investment Extended warranty for the disconnectors Highly cost competitive compared to a new disconnector. Complete solutions to meet the needs of the customers include: Retrofit of all makes and models of disconnectors  Refurbishment of all makes and models of disconnectors Equipment or component parts for disconnectors  Spare parts and service  Overhaul of disconnectors, and  Training of utility manpower on maintenance and servicing of disconnectors.S&S Power Switchgear Equipment Ltd, Pondicherry (SSPSE), one of the pioneers in the field of disconnector switch in the domestic market with over 37 years of experience in the field and with over 15,000 disconnector installations currently in service, has formed a separate division to provide retrofit, refurbishment and lifecycle support services to its customers.
With the knowledge and expertise acquired over the years and with extensive in-house design and manufacturing capabilities, SSPSE is equipped to provide such solutions for disconnectors of not only S&S make but other makes as well. The company has been carrying out retrofit and refurbishment activities for various clients in India over the past years.
The retrofit and refurbishment activities carried out by SSPSE include: Retrofit conversion of mechanical ganging to electrical ganging Refurbishment of current carrying parts Refurbishment of earth switch assembly Retrofit of mechanical interlock Replacement or modification of interlock assembly Refurbishment of operating drive mechanism Refurbishment of disconnector base assembly Refurbishment of complete power train mechanism.SSPSE has undertaken retrofit and refurbishment activities for various utilities and industrial customers, namely:  Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL) Gujarat State Transmission Corporation Ltd (GETCO) Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Urpadan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL) Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd (RRVPNL) Chattisgarh State Power Generation Company Ltd (CSPGCL) Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) Tata Power Ltd, Mumbai.
