Essar Power appoints Sumant Nayak as General Counsel

Essar Power, a subsidiary of the London-listed Essar Energy plc., has appointed Sumant Nayak as General Counsel. Essar Power, a first mover among the Indian private-sector players, has an installed generation capacity of 3,910 MW, which is rising to 6,700 MW by March 2014.
Mr Nayak holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce and law. He is also a company secretary from Institute of Company Secretaries of India, New Delhi and has completed his post graduate diploma in cyber laws and management. In his new role, Mr Nayak will report to the KVB Reddy, Director, Essar Power.
Prior to this, Mr Nayak has served as the Chief Legal Officer and Vice President of GMR Group. He has over 24 years of experience in handling legal affairs, regulatory functions and corporate secretarial functions. At GMR, he played a vital role in leading the legal affairs of GMR airports and was also involved in new biddings and corporate restructuring.  He has earlier worked with Ascendas India as Country Counsel and was the Company Secretary of Engineers India.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Reddy said, “Sumant Nayak has diversified and rich experience in legal sector across various industries. He has in-depth exposure in handling both international and domestic litigations, managing corporate matters with regards to mergers and acquisition of company, private equity transaction, FDI matters etc. His profound skills and expertise will play a pivot role in reaching new heights for Essar Power.”
