Tomohiko Okada, MD, Toshiba India Pvt Ltd believes that the economic growth is built on the back of significant transformations in the power sector.

Transformation in economic growth
India is on its way to become the third-largest economy by 2030, while it already surpassed France in 2017. Such unprecedented economic growth is built on the back of significant transformations in the power sector. India’s commitment to align its power generation mix with its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement is leading the transformation by focusing on clean energy generation.

Toshiba realised early on the huge potential of the Indian energy sector and the challenges that lied ahead. Reiterating its commitment to India, Toshiba invested heavily in establishing manufacturing facilities in India for energy generation equipment, and transmission and distribution equipment. As part of our clean energy promise, we have introduced superior technologies for thermal power plants that have much lower carbon footprint than the conventional thermal power plants, and will become the new norm.

H2One: A game-changer for future energy
Toshiba group has also introduced hydrogen-based energy solutions – H2One, that could be a game-changer for India’s future energy. H2One is a hydrogen-based autonomous energy supply system, which is housed in a single container and combines a renewable energy unit, storage batteries, hydrogen-producing water electrolysis equipment, hydrogen and water storage tanks, and fuel cells. Its mobility and stick-ability makes it a preferred choice for remote or disaster hit areas requiring crucial immediate power.

Initiative has proved beneficial
Government has undertaken several marquee initiatives to support growth of entire energy sector with focus on efficient power generation technologies, reducing T&D losses, ease of access to power and connectivity up to the last mile.

Another laudable initiative is the Saubhagya programme that focuses on achieving universal household electrification up to the last mile connectivity. This means that all our efforts, collaborations between the government and private companies have finally paid off by making a difference in lives of the citizens.

Power saved = power generated
Power saved is power generated. Severe electricity losses during the T&D process affect the country’s economic growth adversely, which is why Government of India is focusing on large amount of capital investment and modern technology into the T&D sector. Building a resilient power grid can reduce the frequency and duration of power outages, and reduced power losses means that more electricity can be accessible to more people.

Improving global competiveness
National High Power Test Laboratory Pvt Ltd (NHPTL) coming into operation is certainly a big milestone in the country as it is helping high voltage equipment manufacturer to cater to the requirements of the customer within a stipulated lead time due to reduced execution cycle time of the projects. The wide range of short circuit testing facilities available at NHPTL will help the utilities / transmission companies validate the design and reliability of the equipment. Few infrastructure improvements at NHPTL can further reduce the lead time of the testing and increase the frequency of the testing of equipment.
