SPM College Adopts Solar Energy on Its Campus

Shyama Prasad Mukherji College, a 50-year-old college for women in New Delhi that is affiliated with the University of Delhi, has taken a step forward to “embrace green and empower clean” by adopting solar energy for its electrical consumption. The college has installed a 120 kWP solar plantunder the Government of Delhi’s solar power subsidy scheme that is run by Indraprastha Power Generation Company Limited (IPGCL). This will help the college reduce its carbon footprint and generate energy in a sustainable manner. The power purchase agreement was signed on 14 November, 2019 at the World Bank office in Connaught Place.

Principal Sadhna Sharma expressed that the college always wished to adopt solar energy and it has become even more imperative now in New Delhi to take such sustainable measures urgently and on a large scale.

Pawan Shah, Manager, IPGCL said that Shyama Prasad Mukherji College is the first college to undertake such an initiative under the new 35 MW solar power scheme for government buildings, and he hopes more colleges will join the scheme to embrace green.

J. P. Singh, Consultants for Solar Plants, J.P. Consultants, stated that this project will generate over 35 per cent of the power requirements of the college. He further added that the solar power plant project will reduce 3,600 metric tonnes of carbon emissions over 25 years, which will help make the planet greener. Annual savings in power bills of the college will be more than ₹9,00,000, and the carbon reduction impact of the project during its lifetime will be equivalent to planting around 8,400 trees, thus boosting the efforts for energy and environment conservation.
