Celebrating one yearEPR (Electrical & Power Review) is one year old now, and we celebrate this issue with the achievements of major power players in India. Based on the theme ‘The Power Rangers’, the special anniversary edition presents you the success stories of industry players who have not only sustained their business but emerged as achievers amidst all odds. The issue highlights their recent achievements, success stories and future growth strategies thus proving to be a blueprint for other players to follow. The industry has gone through some major transformations during the past one year. Power sector in India remains highly dependent on thermal where coal continues to be the primary resource. As coal-based power plants account for over 57 per cent of the installed electricity capacity, meeting the need of coal is one of the top priorities for the nation. However, strangled with the ‘coalgate’ scam, the sector remains under tremendous uncertainty due to ceasing of mining activities across the country. Expecting an overnight solution is nothing but a daydreaming! A lot of uncertainties in regards to the future availability of power due to fuel scarcity are endangering the growth of Indian industry creating poor investor confidence. Forget about ‘power for all’, at least to make the power available to the existing consumers, the government needs to take some concrete steps to create fuel security and boost investors’ confidence. In power transmission sector, the much touted public-private partnership (PPP) model in the power transmission sector is struggling with regulatory issues and yet to produce any significant result. On the distribution front, the government plans to spend ` 3,600 crore to bring down the T&D loss from a staggering 40 per cent to 3 per cent, which is an welcome step. We envisaged EPR to be a mirror to the industry and reflect the trends judiciously. Today, we feel proud that EPR is going in the right direction and has been able to create its own identity. However, we know there is a long way to go and we still feel ‘this is just a beginning’.Please do send me your comments at editor@enpreview.com
