According to 2022-22, India’s per capita electricity consumption was 1255 kWh, which is estimated to be one-third of the global average. In order to increase energy efficiency, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Government of India have implemented some schemes, such as; Standards and Label (S&L) Programme, Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA), Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), Building Energy Efficiency, Agriculture, and Municipal Demand Side Management.
According to the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) Generation Expansion Planning studies for 2029–30, the share of non-fossil fuel based generation capacity in total installed capacity in the country is expected to rise from around 42 percent in October 2022 to more than 64 percent by 2029–30. This would reduce reliance on fossil fuels in electricity generation and promote alternative energy sources such as solar and wind.
In addition, the following actions have been taken to promote renewable power across the country: allowance of up to 100 percent for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through the automatic route. Waiver of Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for interstate sales of solar and wind power for projects that are scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2025. Establishment of a Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) trajectory upto 2029-30. Establishment of Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Parks to provide land and transmission to RE developers for large-scale RE project installation. Schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), Solar Rooftop Phase II, Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) Scheme Phase II, and others. Construction of new transmission lines and the expansion of substation capacity as part of the Green Energy Corridor Scheme for the evacuation of renewable energy. Standard Bidding Guidelines for Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding Process for Power Sourcing from Grid Connected Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Wind Projects. Notification of Green Energy Open Access Rules 2022 for Promoting Renewable Energy. Establishment of the Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) to facilitate the sale of renewable energy power through exchanges.
