India highlights energy security, climate justice concerns of Global South
.

India shall emphasise the common issues of energy security and climate justice and provide resonance to the voice of the Global South.
The Valedictory Session: ‘Mainstreaming Sustainable Development and Climate Resilience for Collective Action’ of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2023.
India’s Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs said, “The time has come for a paradigm shift in the international climate regime, which has to move from a ‘country-centric’ approach to ‘people-centric’ approach to climate actions.”
The WSDS 2023 was attended by Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director-General of the International Solar Alliance, and Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), as well as Ugo Astuto, Ambassador, Delegation of the European Union to India, and other dignitaries. The conference was hosted by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
Hardeep S. Puri said, “My association with the summit goes back to when it was known as the ‘Delhi Sustainable Development Summit.”
With its advocacy for the Global South to enhance commitments at all levels of governance, the Summit has established a prestigious history of advancing global sustainable development over the course of 22 years.
The world is also recovering from a pandemic that occurs only once every century, following which there are geopolitical conflicts occurring in some regions of the world, the three-F issue (food, fuel, and fertiliser) threatens energy security, and economic uncertainty appears to be continuing for the foreseeable future.
Hardeep S. Puri added that the G20 presidency of India will be crucial in determining how the world responds to problems like climate change. From the most localised level to the largest global assembly, it is critical to coordinate and calibrate policy responses. He stated that the foundation of the global reaction will be a stronger commitment to the SDGs and the international agenda. India will highlight the voice of the global south and bring awareness to shared issues like energy security and climate justice.
An unparalleled “saturation of service” has resulted from the transformational advancements in housing, food, energy access, water and sanitation, internet connectivity, and financial inclusion. This kind of development is consistent with the SDGs’ “leave no one behind” philosophy.
To advance the goal of sustainable development, bold initiatives like the Panchamrit Action Plan, which Prime Minister Modi presented at COP-26, are required. India has committed to reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2070. Also addressed was the LiFE Mission, which the Prime Minister used to emphasise that protecting the environment is everyone’s personal responsibility in addition to a global issue.
For the transition to a greener economy and the effective use of energy across diverse sectors, numerous programmes have been put in place. India has advanced the goal of attaining 20 percent ethanol blending from 2030 to 2025–2026 and raised the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline from 1.53 percent in 2013–2014 to 10.17 percent in July 2022. Under India’s G20 Presidency, a Global Partnership on Biofuels would be launched jointly with the USA and Brazil. India is positioned to become a global centre for the generation of green hydrogen and green ammonia because of its unique green hydrogen legislation. By 2030, India wants to produce 5 MT of green hydrogen annually.
