According to the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI, 2023) produced by German Watch, the New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International, all based in Germany, India has risen two points to eighth place. Denmark, Sweden, Chile, and Morocco are the only four minor countries placed above India in the current CCPI report, released at COP 27 in November 2022, as 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th, respectively. No country received first, second, or third place. The first, second, and third ranks were not awarded to any country. Therefore, India’s position is the best among all large economies.
The CCPI intends to increase openness in international climate politics by allowing comparisons of individual countries’ climate protection initiatives and development. The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), published yearly since 2005, is an independent monitoring instrument for tracking the climate protection performance of 59 nations and the EU. Every year, the CCPI sparks substantial public and political discussions in the countries under consideration. The climate protection performance of these 59 countries, which account for 92 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is graded in four categories: GHG Emissions (40 percent of total score), Renewable Energy (20 percent of total score), Energy Use (20 percent of total score), and Climate Policy (20 percent of total score).
The CCPI ranks India as the only G-20 country in the top ten. It should be noted that India will now hold the G-20 Presidency, which will be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to the world its climate mitigation initiatives, such as deploying renewable energy sources and other energy transition programmes.
