The mission’s goal is to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, which will aid India’s transition to energy independence.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The mission’s initial budget will be ₹ 19,744 crore, which includes ₹ 17,490 crore for the SIGHT programme, ₹ 1,466 crore for pilot projects, ₹ 400 crore for R&D, and ₹ 388 crore for other mission components. MNRE will develop scheme guidelines for the implementation of the various components.
By 2030, the mission is expected to produce the following outcomes: a green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) per year, with an associated renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 GW in the country; over ₹ 8 lakh crore in total investments; the creation of over 6 lakh jobs; a cumulative reduction in fossil fuel imports of more than ₹ 1 lakh crore; and an annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of nearly 50 million tonnes.
