Powergrid’s efficient operations and maintenance shaping India’s power future

MANTHAN’23, the 18th Asset Management Conference, navigates challenges, integrates tech, and reinforces Powergrid’s commitment to sustainable asset management practices.

Powergrid Corporation of India is a Maharatna Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, specialising in inter-state bulk power transmission. As a frontrunner in the power transmission sector, the company is dedicated to upholding the highest standards in asset management practices.

MANTHAN’23, the 18th Asset Management Conference of Powergrid, was held recently, in Sohna, Haryana, and organised by Northern Region-I. This conference is a pivotal platform for reviewing and formulating a strategic approach for the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of Powergrid’s rapidly expanding transmission system. It also addresses the challenges in optimising the management of assets under Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs).

The central theme of the 18th Asset Management Conference, known as Manthan, revolved around “Management of assets by leveraging new technologies and Human Assets for Net Zero.” Presided over by the Chairman and Managing Director, the conference witnessed the active participation of Functional Directors. MANTHAN’23 embraced a hybrid format, facilitating the physical presence of Department Heads at the corporate centre, Regional Heads, and Asset Management in charge. Simultaneously, other personnel from corporate departments, regional Asset Management Conference teams, and site-level offices attended the conference virtually.

Powergrid reaffirms its commitment to implementing internationally recognised asset management standards and practices, including ISO55001, to govern its transmission assets effectively. Throughout the two-day conference, MANTHAN’23, numerous decisions about O and M activities and various policies were made, offering invaluable insights into the future of Asset Management Dynamics.

Efficient management of these assets necessitates a structured and systematic approach. Hence, the Asset Management Conference provides comprehensive insights into future operations and maintenance activities, outlining plans to adopt new technologies in alignment with the evolving business ecosystem and effectively address operational challenges.

The conference facilitated discussions on various aspects, including the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies and the role of human assets in achieving net zero goals. The presence of key decision-makers, including the CMD and Functional Directors, ensured that significant matters were deliberated upon, resulting in decisions that will shape the trajectory of Powergrid’s asset management practices.

MANTHAN’23 catalysed the formulation of policies that will guide Powergrid in the dynamic landscape of asset management. The conference addressed current challenges and provided a roadmap for the future, emphasising the importance of staying abreast of technological advancements and industry best practices.

Powergrid’s commitment to excellence in asset management was evident throughout MANTHAN’23. The conference showcased the company’s proactive approach to leveraging technology and human capital for sustainable and efficient operations. As the power transmission sector continues to evolve, Powergrid, India’s largest electric power transmission utility, is responsible for operating and maintaining the large transmission network and aligned assets that form the backbone of India’s power system.
