Multi-billion investments to enhance power supply, create jobs, and improve infrastructure in Odisha’s Sundargarh and Angul districts.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the NTPC Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station (2×800 MW), the NSPCL Rourkela PP-II Expansion Project (1×250 MW), and laid the foundation stone of the NTPC Talcher Thermal Power Project, Stage-III (2×660 MW) during a programme in Sambalpur. With a total investment of ₹ 28,978 Crore, these projects mark significant contributions to the region’s development.
Situated in the Sundargarh district of Odisha, the Darlipali STPS is a pit-head Power Station equipped with Supercritical (highly efficient) Technology. It is providing low-cost power to beneficiary states such as Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Sikkim.
The 250 MW project of NTPC-SAIL Power Company Ltd is established within the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to ensure reliable power supply for the steel plant, which is crucial for economic growth.
Additionally, NTPC is developing the Talcher Thermal Power Project, Stage-III, within the premises of the old TTPS plant in the Angul district of Odisha. This project, which was taken over by NTPC from the Odisha State Electricity Board in 1995, will feature highly efficient Ultra Super Critical Technology-based units with a capacity approximately three times that of the old TTPS plant. While 50% of the capacity from this project is allocated to Odisha, other beneficiary states such as Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Assam will also receive low-cost power from this pit-head station. The construction of this project incorporates modern environmental features such as efficient electrostatic precipitators, Flue gas desulphurization, bio-mass co-firing, and covered storage space for coal. This will lead to reduced Specific Coal Consumption and CO2 emissions.
Moreover, these projects have led to the creation of direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region. They have also contributed to the improvement of physical infrastructure such as approach roads, drainage systems, transportation, and communication facilities. NTPC is undertaking various community development initiatives in the surrounding villages, focusing on education, drinking water, sanitation, health, women empowerment, rural sports, etc. Additionally, NTPC has established a Medical College cum Hospital in Sundargarh, Odisha.
The event was attended by esteemed dignitaries including Raghubar Das, Hon’ble Governor of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha, Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways; Communications; and Electronics and Information Technology, Bishweswar Tudu, Hon’ble Union MoS of Tribal Affairs; and Jal Shakti, Nitesh Ganga Deb, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Nauri Nayak, Hon’ble Member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, and Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC.
