The steady growth in recent years of production from renewable sources with a consequent reduction in the operation of traditional plants has caused new criticalities in the management and stability of the electrical system. Network operators must, therefore, consider new protection approaches, seizing all the advantages and functionalities made available by the technological evolution of modern digital equipment (IEDs). Moreover, all dynamic phenomena have become larger, faster and less predictable than in the past. In this new context, the protection systems of the national transmission network must guarantee more than in the past, the accuracy, selectivity and speed of intervention.

Protection relay technology for power grids evolves through new measurement algorithms due to the increasing number of functions in a single unit (protection, monitoring, regulation, control, communication, and recording).

However, the primary requirements of a protection system remain unchanged: 

  • do not intervene unintentionally in the ordinary operation of the power grid,
  • intervene correctly in the event of faults or abnormal operations,
  • to intervene as quickly and selectively as possible.

To achieve these requirements, a protection system design is necessary to identify the model, protective functions, installation points, connection diagrams, positioning, and characteristics of the measurement transformers according to each installation’s characteristics, operating mode, and service continuity requirements. 

The XMORE platform is the latest Thytronic product line to protect power generation, transmission and distribution. It covers all energy market solutions: utility, renewable generation, oil & gas, transportation and large energy-consuming industries. Moreover, the XMORE Platform combines high performance with ease of use: a full-size touch panel and graphical display with 10 key control functions, as well as THYVISOR IED manager software, grant quick and easier configuration and maintenance of the relays, while an embedded Web Server allows easy and fast IED data monitoring and changes.

Today, XMORE is the leader in protection relay technology, with a dependable and proven protection algorithm, accurate fault detection, comprehensive control monitoring and automation operation, and greater connectivity with multiple redundant communication ports supporting the following protocols: IEC61850 ed2, IEC103, Modbus TCP/IP, and DNP3.

The scalable hardware modularity grants up to 12 measuring analogue inputs, 53 BI, 31 BO, 16 configurable tricolour LEDs, and a high-speed I/O module performing arc flash protection. Short-circuiting CT’s connector and pluggable main cards allow quicker maintenance and recovery time.

The PLC environment allows users to develop automatic reclosing logic at the main restoration. Thytronic also offers This within a dedicated software package.

When the XMR-V model is installed together with electronic voltage sensors (VSENSORS) and the XMR-P is installed together with electronic voltage-current sensors (ThySensor), these solutions guarantee a compact and space-saving installation that is easy to carry out and allows safe maintenance operation within the cabinet.
