Weighing on renewable energy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that all government offices across the state will be powered by solar energy by December 2025. The newly inaugurated campus of MahaUrja, also known as the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), is designed as a green and sustainable facility and will source its power entirely from renewable energy. Fadnavis revealed that Maharashtra has installed over five lakh solar agricultural pumps in the last two years which is more than any other state in the country. He further announced that under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana, solar energy will be supplied to agricultural feeders with a combined capacity of 16,000 MW by 2026. Terming it the largest decentralised solar energy project in Asia, he said the initiative will significantly empower the state’s rural and farming communities. In a forward-looking move, the state has also signed an agreement with a Russian government-owned company to develop thorium-based energy generation technology, aimed at bolstering India’s clean energy potential. With a vision to become a leader in renewable energy, Maharashtra aims to generate 52 percent of its electricity from renewable sources including solar, wind and hydrogen by 2030, drastically reducing its carbon footprint.
