India to get 100 GW nuclear power plant in Rajasthan

The Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP), comprising 4 x 700 MW units and an investment of about ₹42,000 crore, will be developed by ASHVINI (Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Limited), a joint venture of NPCIL and NTPC Limited.

India is accelerating its clean energy transition with an ambitious target of scaling nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. In line with this vision, the foundation stone of the country’s nuclear power project will be laid on September 25 in Banswara district, Rajasthan, marking a milestone in strengthening the nation’s energy security and advancing its sustainability goals.

The facility, powered by 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), showcases India’s technological self-reliance in the nuclear sector. The state-of-the-art project is expected to significantly strengthen the nation’s energy security, generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, and spur socio-economic growth by enhancing local infrastructure in the Banswara district.

India currently has 8.8 GW installed nuclear power generation capacity and plans to raise 100 GW by 2047. This milestone underscores India’s growing commitment to clean, reliable, and sustainable energy, reaffirming nuclear power’s role as a vital pillar of the country’s energy future.

To boost the sector, the government allocated about ₹20,000 crore in the recent Union Budget. Nuclear power is favoured for its low emissions and its ability to provide reliable baseload electricity. The first unit is expected to be commissioned by 2031.
