Welspun to develop 1.2 GW pumped hydroelectric storage project in Maharshtra

The firm has signed an MoU with the Maharashtra’s Department of Water Resources to develop the project. This ambitious venture, named the ‘Dhamni Pumped Hydro Project,’ will see an investment of approximately ₹5,000 crore.

Welspun New Energy has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Government Department of Water Resources to develop a 1.2 GW pumped hydroelectric storage project. This ambitious venture, named the ‘Dhamni Pumped Hydro Project,’ will see an investment of approximately ₹5,000 crore. The project aims to significantly enhance energy storage capacity in India and support the integration of renewable energy sources into the national power grid.

Pumped hydroelectric storage plays a vital role in stabilising the grid by storing surplus energy generated during off-peak periods, which can then be released when demand is high. The Dhamni project will contribute to balancing intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar, ensuring a more reliable and stable energy supply. This aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to transition toward cleaner energy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Located in Maharashtra, the project will leverage water resources of the state, turning them into a strategic asset for power generation and storage. As India continues its aggressive push towards renewable energy, projects like Dhamni are seen as essential for meeting future energy demands while mitigating the challenges posed by the variable nature of renewable sources.

This initiative is also expected to create jobs, stimulate local economies, and contribute to the sustainable development goals of the state. With an investment of ₹5,000 crore, the Dhamni Pumped Hydro Project is poised to become a cornerstone of Indian energy storage infrastructure, positioning Maharashtra as a leader in the renewable energy sector and supporting the broader energy security and sustainability objectives of the nation.
