Striving for a smarter transmission and distribution system
August 6, 2025 11:58 am
When discussing transmission and distribution systems, it can be helpful to simplify the concept by comparing it to a road highway system. In earlier times, when traffic was lighter, a two-lane or four-lane highway was often sufficient. However, as traffic increased, even six-lane or eight-lane highways became congested in many areas, depending on the volume of vehicles moving from one location to another. In this analogy, smaller vehicles can represent lower power loads, while heavy vehicles symbolize higher power demands. Just like road infrastructure is required to support the movement of vehicles, a robust transmission and distribution network is essential for power flow. The key discussion often revolves around how decisions were made to connect specific locations with wider highways—such as six-lane or eight-lane roads—based on the anticipated traffic at the time.
