Why solar energy storage batteries a good idea?
.

The seasonal fluctuations and inherent unpredictability in solar power generation have led to increased adaption of energy storage systems.

Today, India is a surplus power nation, unlike in the past. The government is highly focussed on renewable energy like solar and wind and eyeing an aggressive renewable energy target of 175 GW by 2022. When power is generated through natural resources like wind and solar, there are some challenges. In case of solar power, due to the clouds and rains the solar radiation goes down which impacts the power production. It is difficult to predict such incidences and can cause major challenges for grid stability. According to Suhas Joshi, President – Distributed Energy at ACME the situation will get worse when we will have over 50 per cent of power coming from solar if the proper steps are not taken.

To overcome this problem energy storage is vital. “Lithium-ion batteries store the energy when solar radiation is good in the day time and the stored energy can be used whenever needed. This ensures the grid stability and uninterrupted power,” Joshi adds.

Usually, solar photovoltaic systems require battery subsystems to store the reserve electrical energy for times when there is zero insulation. These installations require battery subsystems with minimum maintenance due to the high costs associated with transporting personnel and providing parts to various sites.

At times like this, the selection of a proper battery for solar photovoltaic system requires a complete analysis of the battery discharge requirements. “The kilowatt-hours of energy stored in the battery depending upon the load requirements, the number of days of storage, the insulation patterns in the geographical area of the installation and the solar array output. Other factors taken into consideration while sizing the battery are operating temperature variations, environmental temperature extremes and weekly/daily usage, the voltage regulator design, and the efficiency of the inverter,” explains Kunwer Sachdev, MD, Su-Kam.

He further adds, “The energy required to charge a battery will be the sum of the previous discharge energy output and the energy expended as work and excess heat during the recharge. Longer charge times and lower charge currents tend to increase charge efficiency.”

Storage solutions
ACME storage comes with lithium-ion battery and ratings are from 1 KW to MW’s. The battery has very long life of over 4,000 – 8,000 charge discharge cycles, claims Joshi. Battery Management Software (BMS) is a heart of this system which is developed in-house by ACME. This BMS gives complete data of battery usage, health and many more parameters. These solutions are designed by in-house R&D team and manufactured in the state-of-the-art ACME India factory.
“Our products are tested for meeting highest quality standards to ensure reliability. ACME batteries are used for grid storage and rooftop storage applications,” said Joshi.

According to Sachdev, “Su-Kam solar batteries are specially designed for optimum performance, long life, high reliability, low self-discharge and quick charging capability. These are built to last longer and are rugged enough to be used in any weather condition.”

Su-Kam Solar batteries are designed at C/10 rating and are engineered for the long life requirements of off-grid or hybrid and DC based systems and residential systems. Homeowners can optimise their renewable energy systems and dramatically reduce operating costs when powering their homes in remote areas. They can use solar panels, wind turbines, or a combination of different sources in a hybrid system.

Applications of Su-Kam solar battery:

  • Solar Inverters and UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply): Home appliances like TV, fan, AC, computer and commercial loads like motors, AC etc.
  • Emergency lighting: Street lighting, remote locations or areas where mains is not available.

Features of Su-Kam solar battery:

  • High electrolyte volume
  • C10 rating
  • High surface area
  • High quantity of electrolyte
