Basic protection relays to monitor power system

Protection relays monitor abnormal power system conditions. They detect defective lines, defective apparatus/equipments and then initiates the appropriate control circuit action. They have an in built circuitry for protection function as well as an electromechanical relay. This circuit measures some value and can be set at a tripping point. Relays might have visual displays; its controlling can be via programming or via knobs. These relays are mainly categorised as:

• Voltage sensing (protection) relays
• Current sensing (protection) relays
• Phase sensing (protection) relays
