APAR adapting to demand surge in clean energy landscape
.

Policy support, such as the ₹24,000 Cr PLI scheme for domestic solar cells and module manufacturing and the promotion of floating PV projects, has stimulated the industry.

The cables and conductors segment is witnessing robust demand from the domestic market with a large pipeline of transmission and distribution projects. With the government’s emphasis on pushing renewable energy to the front, the industry is now looking forward to supplying cables to the solar and wind power segments in addition to the oil and gas, railways, defence and other specialised segments. Shashi Amin shares his views in talks with the EPR Magazine.

How are government schemes like RDSS and DDUGJY influencing India’s wire and cable industry?

The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a recent initiative by the central government, is catalysing demand for cables and conductors in the power sector. Aimed at enhancing distribution infrastructure, RDSS consolidates ongoing projects from schemes like IPDS and DDUGJY. The cables segment is experiencing robust domestic demand, fueled by numerous transmission and distribution projects. With a focus on renewable energy, the industry anticipates supplying cables to solar and wind power alongside sectors like oil, gas, railways, and defence. As global electrification progresses, there is a growing need for advanced cables to ensure efficient transmission. The industry’s future success hinges on innovation, sustainable practices, and strategic growth, contributing significantly to infrastructure and global development.

How do your products tackle counterfeit and substandard issues, ensuring compliance in wire development?

Despite our strong presence in the industry, a new challenge has emerged as competitors supply substandard cables in the trade business. To address this, APAR emphasises the importance of customer awareness, urging attention to key parameters such as conductor weight, insulation thickness, and armour coverage. In the retail wires sector, the company has introduced ‘APAR ANUSHAKTI’ house wires, leveraging E-beam technology to ensure product uniqueness and counteract counterfeiting.

With a commitment to global sustainability, APAR has aligned with EU regulations, ensuring RoHS and REACH compliance in its cable exports to Europe. Our extensive R&D efforts result in specialised solutions for diverse sectors. For both domestic and international markets, APAR holds multiple certifications, including 50+ UL product approvals, DCA, ECA, IEC 62930, TuV, and EN 50618, solidifying its position as a trusted brand in sectors demanding stringent quality and standards adherence.

How has India’s renewable energy shift affected cable industry demand?

Cables and conductors play a pivotal role in the power transmission and distribution (T&D) network, particularly with India’s growing emphasis on renewable energy projects. The expansion of the industry is driven by the imperative need for power evacuation from upcoming renewable energy ventures and the provision of a reliable 24×7 power supply. In 2018, a national policy was introduced to promote an extensive grid-connected wind-solar PV hybrid system, fostering a surge in demand for various cables in specialised applications within solar and wind plants.

The ambitious plan of the government to install 140 GW of wind energy by 2030 necessitates substantial investment in the sector, resulting in a heightened demand for specific cables like MV elastomer cables, nacelle cables, converter cables, tower power and control cables, lightning cable for blades, and generator cables. The government’s aggressive target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, with a major portion of solar energy, has further boosted the cable demand. Policy support, such as the ₹24,000 Cr PLI scheme for domestic solar cells and module manufacturing and the promotion of floating PV projects, has stimulated the industry.

To meet the evolving needs of the renewable energy sector, we have introduced a range of solar cables with electron beam cross-linking, catering to installations from 2.5 to 500 sqm. These cables feature flexible aluminium or copper conductors, rodent resistance, and UV-stabilised PVC outer sheathing, ensuring durability in varied environmental conditions. Our solar cables adhere to international standards and certifications, providing reliability for solar installations.

While recognising the safety concerns associated with overhead conductors, we have presented an innovative solution in the form of medium voltage covered conductors (MVCC). This innovation offers enhanced safety, prolonged conductor life, higher operating temperatures, and suitability for challenging environmental conditions. We are committed to innovation and compliance, which positions APAR as a reliable contributor to meeting the increasing demands for cables in the evolving landscape of the power sector.
