The power sufficiency is also good news for the ‘Make in India’ initiative as a good dose of power is a necessary precursor to manufacturing.

India becoming power surplus in financial year 2016-17 is really a positive development and this has been possible due to the government’s efforts to unclog the system and getting the clearance of lot of power projects due to environment clearance and financial difficulties. “Coal output which was stagnant for years has increased significantly helping many stranded power plants start generating electricity. A power surplus country can provide enough power to industries and is suitably positioned to meet any further raise in demand for power. The power sufficiency is also good news for the ‘Make in India’ initiative as a good dose of power is a necessary precursor to manufacturing. Power sufficiency also will boost small and medium enterprises along with home-based manufacturers which will further strengthen economic growth of the country,” briefs Sunil Sikka, President, Havells India while commenting on the power surplus.
Revival of stagnant power plantsSikka observes that the augment in the coal production has played a major role in bringing transformation. He comments, “The increase of coal production, consequent revival of stagnant power plants and the capacity addition to the tune of 46,453MW in conventional energy played a key role in bringing the transformation.” Also, the discom restructuring and recapitalising scheme under UDAY is also another major contributor in making the country power surplus. “The government also aims to add 175GW of renewable energy by 2020 and significant progress has been made in installing solar and wind energy projects around the country which are positive steps in the right direction,” he adds.
Havells’s contributionHavells with an innovative range of conventional switchgears, HT and LT cables, capacitors and circuit breakers have been a significant supplier of quality products to the transmission and distribution sector. “Our energy saving lighting components like LED’s and CFL’s are amongst the first choice of consumers and has delivered immense savings in terms of power consumption,” claims Sikka.
Havells offers a wide range of products catering to both consumer and industrial requirements. “As the country embarks on an ambitious power capacity addition plan, we will see an increase in demand for inputs on the transmission and distribution side as well. With a range of HT and LT power cables, fire survival cables, solar cables, switches, circuit breakers, and conventional switchgears, Havells is well positioned to cater to rising demands,” states Sikka.
