IoT and Industry 4.0 transforming the power sector
Today, intelligent power leverages the digital revolution and drives innovation through a combination of smart assets, connectivity, data science, and business models that are creating new interactions. At the heart of intelligent power are “things” that produce, collect, and process data. This data can help generate insights to make better decisions as more technologies have built-in connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT).

The future of power generation is responding to the fundamental shift in how consumers use power and how utilities provide it. Renewables like wind and solar are increasingly responsible for a greater share of generated power. Smart grid technologies deliver real-time and up-to-the-minute information. Batteries now provide more than reserve power, with load shifting and the sale of power back to utilities becoming real cost saving and revenue enhancement options. With 125 billion connected devices projected to occupy the grid by 2030, and a 600 percent rise in IoT cyber attacks from 2016 to 2017 alone, providing power isn’t enough. It must be offered with reliability, safety, and security. Eaton products are built to meet stringent third-party safety standards, such as UL’s data acceptance programme for cyber-security, and its 2900 Standard for Software Cyber-security for network-connectable products.

Opportunities for smart electricity in India
In the past, electricity grids were simple pipes through which electricity flowed from the producer to consumers. They have however evolved gradually to become smart”. This has enabled them to solve the growing issue of managing the balance of the grid. In India, this is still in the nascent stage, but the government is planning to address it and hence is focusing on setting up smart meters and prepaid meters. This comes in the backdrop of the ongoing crisis in discoms due to poor financial health, which has led to delayed payment to generation utilities.

Another component which will be in limelight in smart electricity will be, batteries being used for storing the surplus electricity, produced during distributed generation. The excess energy produced, can be stored using battery banks without trading back to the utility. Batteries are used to provide a backup power supply for the real time-clock present in smart meter. Eaton offers lithium-ion battery storage along with its 3-Phase UPS solutions which are an alternate to conventional Lead Acid batteries.

Concerning the emerging end-use technologies, it seems to be clear that smart electricity will play an important role in the future. Its penetration in different countries will increase in the next 10-20 years. The primary concern is still the price of the components involved, which is constantly at a high level; although there is potential for decrease in the next five years. Cost-benefit analysis shows that smart metering is economically feasible in most of the case, if the benefits to all stakeholders and to society is considered.
