Standardising SPDs are critical for remote monitoring of electrical safety
.

K.Arul Prakash, in an interview with EPR Magazine, stresses upon the need for quality selection and installation practices to maintain and monitor safe operations in an electrical unit.

What is the present demand scenario for Lightning and Surge Protection Devices in the Indian electrical and power sector?

There is a pretty good market demand for these products as there have been several awareness programs being held by various bodies. Additionally, the latest NBC and NEC codes emphasise on the need for Lightning Surge Protection devices. Moreover, the clients are keen to reduce the downtime of their equipment occurring due to lightning surge.

What are the critical factors to consider while maintaining efficiency in Surge Protection Devices?

Appropriate selection of SPDs with respect to its voltage protection level and maximum continuous operating voltage, are very important. More than selection, installation practices as recommended by standards on the lead length are very critical. Further, loose wirings should be avoided to prevent from mishaps.

Can you elaborate on the MCR technology used in SPDs?

It is an application of Measurement and Control Technology. SPDs play a vital role in protecting signal and communication lines especially in process industry where they use different BUS protocols. SPDs with failure indication and remote monitoring system can be installed in locations where it could not be monitored very often.

What kinds of accessories are required in SPD’s, and what are your offerings in this segment?

Spare plugs for replacement of SPD will be one component to be looked in to, as the devices are subject to fail by protecting the equipment.

This is also dependent on the intensity of Lightning current on a particular area. OBO offers spare plugs for almost all modules to avoid replacement of entire unit.
